Anti-Bullying News from Alaiedon Elementary School
2012-2013 School Year
Project Peace to Take Flight this Spring at Alaiedon
This year's 5th Grade Music Program performance held May 8th is titled Project Peace. Students initiated this year's theme of peace with ourselves, peace with our neighbors, and peace with the world. Building one's self-confidence and building up other's self-confidence is interwoven in the lessons. As such, bullying and anti-bullying are constantly being pondered by the students while they learn in Mrs. McRay's classroom. This collage style program incorporates student created essays, raps, poems, and plays with vocal and instrumental songs.
Donation Provides More Anti-Bullying Children's Books
Thanks to a generous private donation, Alaiedon Elementary School was able to purchase additional books on the topic of bullying to add to our collection. At all grade levels, the picture books and/or short stories are used as prompts for classroom discussions regarding the impact of bullying. Teachers and students are engaged in an ongoing dialogue regarding strategies to combat bullying, promote positive behavior, and shed light on how everyone at Alaiedon can promote and be a part of a safe and healthy learning environment!

Social Worker and Teachers Working Together to Provide Support for Students
Alaiedon's social worker, teaching faculty, support staff, and principal continue to provide support for students that have been impacted by bullying. Student support groups have been formed in some instances and lessons on self-control, how to treat peers and adults with respect, and team behavior have proven successful for many of Alaiedon's students.

Anti-Bullying Children's Books
Alaiedon Elementary School purchased a collection of books on the topic of bullying. The books are distributed to classrooms on a regular basis, and teachers are reading them to their students. Often, the teachers use the stories as prompts for ongoing conversations about bullying at the classroom level.
Mrs. Peden, Alaiedon's Librarian, read How to be Cool in 3rd Grade by Betsy Duffey to both 3rd grade classroms during library time at the beginning of the school year as part of our Bullying Prevention Efforts.

Positive Behavior Supports
All classrooms are teaching a Positive Behavior Supports lesson entitled "Stop-Walk-Talk" which instructs students in addressing actions towards them by other students. This lesson provides students and staff with a common language to use to prevent bullying-type behaviors from continuing and/or escalating. Students first say to the schoolmate "stop" regarding the behavior. If it doesn't stop, the student is to "walk" away. If this doesn't work, the student "talks" to an adult who intervenes. One premise is that this process empowers students to take action positively and without adding/taking on bully-type behaviors.
